Artist statement

When sculpting, the intimate, hands-on element of the practice often creates a deep sense of connection and unity between me and the material. “My body touching the furniture became a unified thing, I thought, ‘What if I make furniture that is a body?’” is a quote from sculptor Aiko Hachisuka, an artist that particularly resonates with me as I think about my work in a similar way to how she does. My sculptures are created with easily obtained materials, often bed sheets or my old clothes. I think that this contributes to the personal aspect of my work as each sculpture includes an element of myself within it. The theme of decay is prevalent in many of my projects, I’m interested in the variation of colours and shapes that form when objects begin to decay. I often experiment with burning and bleaching, two processes that I think can visually degrade fabric. As well as this, I like to experiment with painting and layered screen-printing. Screen-printing allows me to quickly cover a large area with colour and the layering of the image creates texture and pattern.
